Survey findings are conclusive: the further that people have to travel to get to work, the more likely they are to use online banking. Just 30% of people who live in immediate proximity to their workplace use the internet to do their banking. This share rises to over 50% among commuters who have to travel further than 50 km.
The reason for this link can be quickly identified: commuting takes time that has to be made up elsewhere. Making fewer visits to the bank is one option. On top of this, many people move out to the suburbs or the hinterland to start a family, for example, and may find that their bank has no branches there. That said, surveys show that commuters’ desire for personal advice is at least as strong as that of other bank customers. Commuters need solutions that take into account both the limited time at their disposal and their distance from commercial centres.
"An innovation is rarely the product of a solitary genius beavering away in splendid isolation; rather, it is invariably the culmination of a collaborative endeavour." (H.-J. Lamberti, Deutsche Bank AG)
